New York Shogi Club

The New York Shogi Club currently meets on Wednesday evenings, from about 6:30 or 7:00 to 11:00 p.m., in the Ronin Bar and Grill, a Japanese restaurant at 9 East 37th Street in Manhattan, between Fifth and Madison Avenues.

For those unfamiliar with our game, shogi is the Japanese form of chess.
It has been around for more than a thousand years and shares a common ancestor with Western, or European, chess.

The most distinctive and dynamic feature of shogi is the practice of captured pieces changing sides and being held in reserve in order to be dropped back into the game.

The club includes both Japanese and non-Japanese players who range in strength from beginner to amateur 4-dan.

We always welcome newcomers who want to learn the game.

From time to time Japanese professional and strong amateur shogi players visit the club.

The shogi club also participates in public events such as the annual Sakura Matsuri at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
